The Briggs & Stratton DC Shunt uses the simple relationship between voltage, current and resistance to allow the testing of alternator output using millivolts rather than amperes.
The DC Shunt is connected to the charging circuit and a multi-meter is connected to the red and black terminals. A known resistance between the red and black terminals allows alternator amperage to be read in millivolts.
Using a DC shunt is safer for both the technician and his/her equipment.
