What is a mulching blade?
A mulching blade is a lawnmower blade designed to cut your grass like a normal blade, but then keep the clippings in the cutting deck to repeatedly cut them into tiny pieces.
Once small enough, the clippings are deposited back into the lawn where they act as a natural fertiliser.
To achieve this, mulching blades have a different design to standard blades:
- unlike a standard blade which is mostly straight, the shape of a mulching blade is curved to generate airflow which circulates the clippings around the cutting deck
- a mulching blade features a longer sharp cutting edge in order to repeatedly cut the clippings in the cutting deck
Some mid-range mowers can be converted into a mulching mower with a mulch kit, which can include a mulching blade and a mulch plug, which blocks the chute to the grass bag.
Some mulching blades are versatile in that they can be used to mulch or collect the grass. By removing the mulch plug, the mulching blade will lift the grass clippings into the chute to the grass bag, though not quite as efficiently as a standard blade.
